Trump wasted no time alienating his new Chief of Staff John Kelly. Trump doesn’t know how to share respect. He’s lived his whole life in charge surrounded by people who are willing to serve his every wish. It’s hard to imagine how difficult it must be for a decorated military general to respect the draft dodging president.
The New York Times just issued a report detailing a fiery exchange between Trump and Kelly, with more fire coming the way of Kelly. By the end of the exchange, Kelly admitted that he hadn’t been spoken to that way in his nearly 4-decade long military career.
Staffers “gently suggested [to Trump that he] refrain from injecting politics into day-to-day issues of governing after last month’s raucous rally in Arizona.” Trump responded by taking his frustrations out on “the most senior aide in his presence,” who happened to be Kelly.
According to the report, Kelly “reacted calmly” to Trump’s outburst, “but he later told other White House staff members that he had never been spoken to like that during 35 years of serving his country.”
Kelly vowed that “he would not abide such treatment” in the future.
